35th Interdisciplinary Viking Symposium in Århus:
The Viking Age – in fact and fiction
04.05.2016
The symposium theme is “The Viking Age – fact and fiction”. From the days of the saga writers over the Romantic era to the present, fictional presentations have been a powerful source for our view of the Viking Age. The genres range from sagas, paintings, novels and theatre dramas to contemporary films, cartoons and TV serials. The products have influenced popular images, but their influence may even be felt in agendas of research. Fictional images and narratives may help to fill in blanks in our sources, but may also restrict our imagination. Meanwhile, fictional representations have often gathered and popularized inspiration from research, and have stimulated broader interest on the subject of the Vikings. In recent years, the boundary between factual and fictional genres have moved ever closer. This symposium invites presentations that explores the above mentioned and other themes in research on the Viking Age. The theme encompasses all periods, genres and disciplines. Papers on open topics may also be considered.
The 35th Interdisciplinary Viking Symposium will be held on Wednesday, 4 May 2016 at the University of Aarhus.
