Ramzan Kadyrov, dressed in medieval armour, celebrated the winnings of Putin by 98% at a medieval style party in Grozny in the Russian republic of Chechnya
Ramzan Kadyrov is the controversial leader of the Russian republic of Chechnya. Not only is he under a constant barrage of heavy criticism from both international leaders and the press, he has also been criticised by Russia, which apparently think that his blatant corruption, violce and criminal racket – not to say violations of human rights. As a professed Muslim he stated in 2009 the he approved of honour killings, based on the belief that woman are the property of their husbands; on several occasions he has expressed firm support of polygamy, claiming that it would be more honest than having a lot of mistresses and that it would solve Russia’s demographic problem. He is a staunch supporter of Vladimir Putin, who reappointed him as leader in March. According to the Guardian, Putin claimed to have done this because of “everything that had been done in the past years for the Chechen people first and foremost, and by extension for the whole of Russia”.
Last night, on the eve of the elections in Russia, Ramzan Kadyrov, celebrated the alleged win in the rigged Russian elections – where 98% voted in favour of the continued government by Putin – by hosting a medieval dinner in Grozny. In the video Kadyrov can be seen strutting around in medieval chainmail with a conical helmet, a longsword strapped to his belt, a shield on his back and a spear in his hand. The event was claimed to be a solemn celebration of the women of Chechnya, of which a selection can be seen dressed in medieval Caucasian outfits. The attending men – apart from the hapless and obviously frightened servant in the background – were all dressed in traditional Caucasian folk-costume. Unfortunately there is no indication that it is really water of the approved non-alcoholic variant, which is in the non-medieval goblets (why two glasses??)
Ramzan Kadyrov was the only person dressed in medieval armour.
